4 dead in New Jersey fire; mix-up delayed response

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Four people have been killed in a fast-moving New Jersey fire, and the mayor says a mix-up over the street name delayed firefighters' response.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop says it took firefighters seven to eight minutes to get to the scene Thursday instead of the normal three to four minutes because a dispatcher misunderstood a caller.

The fire happened on Grant Avenue. The mayor says an initial caller did not specify street or avenue, and a dispatcher thought the person had said "Grand" instead of "Grant." Firefighters were routed to Grand Street instead of Grant Avenue.

Fulop says the home was already engulfed in flames when calls came in.

Neighbors say they believe the victims are a couple in their 80s and their two sons, who are in their 50s.
