Poll: Americans disagree on Bergdahl deal

WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Many Americans say they disagree with President Obama's decision to release five Taliban detainees in exchange for Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl's freedom.

A new CBS News poll shows 45 percent of Americans disapprove of the prisoner swap, while just 37 percent approve.

More specifically, 55 percent of veterans say they disapprove of the deal, and 65 percent say the U.S. paid too high a price to secure the release of the American prisoner of war.

Despite the Obama administration's reasoning, many lawmakers are leaving closed-door briefings with more questions about why Congress wasn't briefed before the exchange was made.

The House Armed Services Committee begins hearings on the swap on Wednesday.
