Lawmaker: Complaints about vets home get review
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The chairman of a state Senate subcommittee looking into complaints about a veterans home in western Michigan says the issue is being given serious review.
Republican state Sen. Patrick Colbeck of Wayne County's Canton Township is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee's subcommittee on state police and military affairs. He says he saw some disturbing trends in complaints against contractor J2S Group.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Colbeck says he hasn't determined whether complaints including neglect are a result of the contractor or other "extenuating circumstances."
J2S spokesman John Truscott says most of the allegations are either false or not directed at J2S.
The Grand Rapids Home for Veterans has about 500 residents. State nursing aides there were laid off this year and work turned over to J2S.
