DNR officials call elk hunt season a successDETROIT (AP) - Michigan officials are calling the 2013 elk hunting seasons successful because the targeted number of elk to be killed was met. The Detroit News reports that 171 elk were bagged during the two-part season. Seventy-eight elk were killed in the early season from late August to early September. Another 93 were killed in the late season in December. Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials say that 158 elk were killed in 2012. They say that more than 32,000 hunters apply each year for elk hunting licenses. A lottery was used to select 100 to hunt in each half of 2013. The DNR estimates the elk population at 800 to 1,400 in the state.
