Key hearing set for 3 in killing of Mich. man, 71

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - A key hearing is scheduled for three young men charged in the robbery-slaying of a 71-year-old man at a senior living complex in Ann Arbor.

Nineteen-year-old Mark Paling of Melvindale, 20-year-old Rikky Ranger of Melvindale and 19-year-old Richard Thompson of Flat Rock are to appear Friday for a preliminary examination.

The three are accused of killing David Maurer, whose body was found Dec. 1 at Lurie Terrace senior housing.

Thompson's lawyer, Jim Gallagher, says he has no comment on his client's case. Messages seeking comment were left with attorneys for Paling and Ranger.

Authorities say the defendants killed Maurer and stole a computer, money, drugs, credit cards and other items.

The men are charged with open counts of murder, meaning a jury could consider either first- or second-degree murder.
