BC officers tested for hep. C after breaking up robbery

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two Battle Creek Police officers are being tested for hepatitis C after they had a bloody encounter with a suspected thief.

Police say the owner of Cliff Street Grocery noticed 25-year-old Davone Benjamin stealing on Tuesday.

There was a struggle and they say Benjamin cut his hands trying to break out a window and escape.

The owner held him until police arrived.

While attempting to arrest him, officers came into contact with Benjamin's blood.

Benjamin told police he is not sure if he has hepatitis C, so both officers were sent to the hospital for testing and treatment.
