Decision on Alamo Township noise ordinance postponed

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A board meeting in Alamo Township was postponed Monday night after a huge crowd showed up to defend a speedway that was in jeopardy.

Newschannel 3 was told that nearly 500 people showed up for Monday’s meeting, more than triple the fire code limit for the building.

The crowd was there because the board is considering a new noise ordinance that some say could drive the Kalamazoo Speedway right out of business.

However the Alamo Township Supervisor, Lou Conti, tells Newschannel 3 that is not their intention.

“We’re willing to negotiate,” said Conti. “We’re also willing to take a year with him to take measurements and see how we can work with him to bring it down. Our point is, we don’t want to shut him down, we want to tone him down.”

The Kalamazoo Speedway has been holding races for more than 60 years, but the township administrators say some neighbors are bothered by the noise, so the township is looking at a new ordinance that sets a maximum decibel level of 82 at the Speedway’s property line.

Racers say abiding by that would be impossible.

The meeting has been rescheduled for Feb. 25. it will be held at the Alamo Elementary School (8184 N. Sixth St.). Doors open at 6:30pm meeting starts at 7pm.
