UPDATED: Apartment fire in Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Three young children have died as a result of a fire at Interfaith Apartments in Kalamazoo.

The children were identifed by witnesses on scene as 3-year-old twins, Tevin and Taniya Williams, and a 1-year-old girl, whose name was not given.

The fire broke out shortly before 2:00pm Monday afternoon.

Dispatchers say that the fire was fully involved when officers responded. The apartment complex sits on Kalamazoo's north side.

According to neighbors, the children's mother left the children alone with her boyfriend, who then left the apartment as well.

Firefighters say the blaze very likely began on the first floor, and then spread to the second.

When they arrived on-scene, firefighters reportedly found a stairway virtually gone, and found the children deceased inside.

One apartment has been gutted in the fire. Another is heavily damaged.

One firefighter was injured, after a ladder he was climbing collapsed. He was taken to a hospital, but is expected to be fine.

About 35 firefighters are currently at the complex, working on hotspots at this time.

Investigators say it's too early to determine if the fire is considered suspicious.
