Search missing Big Rapids man called off for night

VAN BUREN, Mo. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Big Rapids Department of Safety officials announced Friday night that the search has been called off for the night for a Michigan man in Missouri.

Officers say that Fred Byrne was last seen leaving his mother's home in Holland Township around 3:00pm on Tuesday.

Byrne mentioned that he intended to stop at Rivertown Crossing Mall in Grandville on his way home to Big Rapids. He hasn't been seen since.

At around 6:00 p.m. Thursday night, Big Rapids authorities were informed that Byrne's 2005 Chevy Malibu was found just outside the Mark Twain National Forest in Van Buren, Missouri.

The vehicle was unlocked, with the keys in the center console, and Byrne's wallet was found on the rear floorboard.

According to the report, Byrne's vehicle will be brought back to Big Rapids, where the Michigan State Police Lab will give it a look.

At this time, they report that no decision has been made regarding whether or not the search would be continued tomorrow.
