Branch Co. inmate escapes, is recaptured

COLDWATER, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A jailbreak in Coldwater ended almost as quickly as it began Wednesday.

Deputies say a man busted out of his jail cell at around 4:15 that afternoon, and after a fellow inmate let guards know, police were hot on the man's trail.

Branch County Sheriff John Pollack showed Newschannel 3 how an inmate in a temporary housing facility escaped late Wednesday afternoon--via a small, boarded up window, the work of 19-year-old Cody Barber, of Florida.

We're told that Barber used his fist or a pipe from the bathroom to bust out the window, and after crawling through the window and running for it, he was seen on State Street about a half-mile away.

He was quickly tackled by a deputy and Coldwater police officer.

Barber was back in cuffs in less than 15 minutes, and the Sheriff said he was in Michigan, looking to move, when he was picked up on a probation violation out of Lake County, Florida.

Now, the teenager, who called his aunt who's in the area and told her he's coming home when he broke out, will stay in jail much longer.
