2 of the Great Lakes at lowest water levels on record

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two of the Great Lakes have hit their lowest water levels ever recorded.

Officials say drought and dredging could be behind it.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said that tests taken last month show Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are at their lowest ebb since record keeping started in 1918.

The lakes were 29 inches below their long-term average and have declined 17 inches in just the last year.

Low water causes heavy economic losses by forcing cargo ships to carry lighter loads, leaving boat docks high and dry and damaging fish spawning areas.
