Report: Taxes paying for dangerous nursing homes
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new report out Thursday morning says the government could be spending taxpayer money on nursing homes that could endanger the health of residents.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services Medicare paid about $5.1 billion for patients to stay in skilled nursing facilities that failed to meet federal quality of care rules.
Investigators estimate that in one out of five stays, patients' health problems weren't addressed in the care plans, resulting in neglectful and potentially dangerous conditions.
It is now reviewing regulations to improve enforcement at the homes.
