2 felony charges for 15 minutes of freedom

COLDWATER, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - An inmate who escaped for 15-minutes from the Branch County Jail in Coldwater will now face at least two felony charges.

Deputies say 19-year-old Cody Barber of Florida busted out of his jail cell around 4:15 Wednesday afternoon.

A fellow inmate tipped guards off about the jail break.

We're told Barber used a fist or a pipe from the bathroom to bust out a small window. After breaking out of the jail he made a run for it.

He was spotted a half-mile away and was tackled by a deputy and a Coldwater police officer.

"The only thing he did was apologize and to say that he knew it was stupid and he doesn't know why he tried it he just felt like he had to get out of there," said Branch County Sheriff John Pollack.

The sheriff says Barber was here planning a possible move to Michigan when he was picked up for violating his probation out of Lake County, Florida.

Barber is now facing new charges of escape, destruction of police property and resisting.
