Lansing takes first step to keep drunk driving threshold at .08

LANSING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A House Committee has taken the first step toward ensuring that Michigan's drunk driving threshold stays at .08 percent.

The House Criminal Justice Committee approved the legislation by unanimous vote Wednesday.

The bill now advances to the House floor.

Now, if no legislation is passed to prevent it, Michigan's drunk driving threshold would revert to .10 percent on October 1st.

Several law enforcement groups, as well as Mothers Against Drunk Driving testified last week before the committee.

They say the .08 limit has helped lower the number of drunk driving crashes in the last decade.

Experts say the bill is likely to pass the legislature and the Governor is likely to sign it.

Michigan could lose an estimated $50 million in federal highway funding if the limit changes.
