Updated: Three teens hospitalized after using synthetic marijuana

BRANCH COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3 ) – Three eighth graders in Branch County were rushed to the hospital on Friday after police say they smoked synthetic marijuana.

No adults were home at the time and one of the boys was found outside without a jacket or shoes on.

Michigan State Police showed Newschannel 3 the evidence of an afternoon gone wrong in Coldwater Township. A package labeled ‘Gods of Aroma,’ which is sold as incense, but considered synthetic marijuana, and a soda bottled turned into a smoking device.

State police say the three teenagers, aged 13 and 14, admitted to smoking ‘Gods of Aroma’ on Friday while one of the boy’s grandmothers was at work.

One teenager was later found wandering around in the cold on Behnke Road, wearing shorts and socks and appearing to be ‘out of it.’

“Maybe they thought they were invincible, that’s the impression I got, that they were feeling invincible and one boy got violently sick over it,” said the grandmother, who did not wish to be identified. “What they were smoking, they could die from it, there could be brain damage. They just wanted to know how much they inhaled.”

The grandmother told Newschannel 3 that one of the teens vomited all over the house. The boys were rushed to the hospital, where the grandmother followed after getting a call from police at work.

She did offer up some advice for anyone who is worried they might encounter the same thing.

“As I tell my grandson, we have every right to go through their things if there’s something suspicious going on,” said the grandmother, “and never leave them alone with a group of kids.”

The boys were treated at the hospital and released to their parents.
