Classmates gather 32 years after girl disappeared
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A dozen or so of Deanie Peters' former schoolmates recently gathered to remember the 14-year-old West Michigan girl who disappeared 32 years ago.
The somber gathering took place last week at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids.
It was the second year the group gathered to honor Peters, whose disappearance on Feb. 5, 1981, is an ongoing cold case investigated by the Kent County sheriff's department.
Peters went missing from her brother's wrestling practice at Forest Hills Central Middle School.
The former classmates are now in their mid-40s. The Grand Rapids Press reports they gathered under a tree planted years ago outside the church in memoriam.
At the tree's base, a post with Peters' name sits as a reminder.
Authorities reopened the case in 2008.
