Noise ordinance issue in Alamo Township is near a compromise
KALAMAZOO (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A compromise on a proposed noise ordinance between Kalamazoo Speedway and the Alamo Township Board could soon be at the finish line.
So many people showed up to weigh in on the ordinance this week, township leaders had to postpone the meeting.
Some fear, that ordinance could drive Kalamazoo Speedway out of business.
The board supervisor spoke with the owner of the speedway this week to hammer out a compromise before a next meeting.
"He said basically lets try to figure this out and get it hammered out by the meeting on the 25th. We'll take noise readings and after the season's over we'll work on noise ordinances that work for us both," said Gary Howe, Kalamazoo Speedway owner.
The owner says the current noise at the speedway's property line, hits between 85 and 92 decibels.
As the proposed noise ordinance stands today the speedway would have to hit 82, or be fined $500.
Howe doubts an agreement will be made by the next meeting. He says he's okay with that because he wants the final decision to be done in public.
