Battle Creek man accused of child abuse

BATTLE CREEK (NEWCHANNEL 3) – A Battle Creek man is accused of brutally abusing two children.

20-year-old Guy Pettit was charged this week with three counts of first-degree child abuse.

He’s accused of hurting 3 and 4-year-old children belonging to his live-in girlfriend.

Police have been investigating the case since last October.

Child Protective Services alerted them to the youngest child in the home, a 3 ½ year old boy, was hospitalized. The abuse was so brutal police won’t release to Newschannel 3 what happened.

Detective Sergeant Jim Martens tells Newschannel 3 detectives dug further into the case, after they realized this was the second time that child made a trip like this to a hospital. They discovered the girlfriend’s 4-year-old son made remarks to other adults he was also being abused by Pettit.

Those children were removed from the Battle Creek home and are now staying with the children’s father.

"They’re going to counseling right now and through counseling and obviously parents love I think they can move on from this," said Martens.

Pettit was given a $200,000 cash bond.

His next court appearance is on Monday.
