Norton Shores police win top traffic safety award

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (AP) - A West Michigan police agency is being honored for its traffic safety work.
   
AAA Michigan says in a release Thursday that the Norton Shores Police Department has earned the $17,000 grand prize in the 2013 Award for Traffic Safety Excellence.
   
Norton Shores is along Lake Michigan, northwest of Grand Rapids.
   
The state police Negaunee post received the first-place award, while the Novi Police Department took second-place.
   
A panel represented by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, state Transportation Department, Prosecuting Attorneys Association and Dearborn-based AAA Michigan judged the entries.
   
Awards were presented Feb. 7 by the Office of Highway Safety Planning, Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and the auto club.
