Deputy recognized as hero

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Van Buren County deputy is being recognized for his quick thinking action that saved a fellow officer's life.

Several Michigan officers were flying back on March 3rd from a drug recognition expert certification in Arizona when one of the officers suffered a major medical condition.

There appeared to be no doctor on board so Van Buren County Deputy Brian Matthews stepped up.

Matthews was once trained as paramedic. He was able to assist the officer until the plane could make an emergency landing in Des Moines, Iowa.

The officer was taken to a hospital and treated.

For his heroic actions the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office gave Deputy Matthews the Life Saving Award on March 14th.
