Amash, Huizenga explain no-vote for Violence Against Women Act
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two West Michigan congressman are laying out their reasons for voting against the Violence Against Women Act.
Congress passed that law last week which provides assistance to women trying to escape abusive relationships.
The new version of the law also provides protections for gay, bisexual and transgender people as well as native Americans.
Representatives Justin Amash and Bill Huizenga both voted against the bill because they say it's unconstitutional.
A spokesman for Amash told M-Live the Violence Against Women Act expands federal criminal law beyond what the constitution allows, such as expanding laws against cyber stalking.
Huizenga reportedly had similar problems with the legislation, as well as what he saw as a lack of oversight on how the funds would be distributed.
