Power outage in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - As of 5AM Monday morning power has been restored for nearly 5,000 customers.

An Indiana-Michigan Power transmission line serving four Cooperative substations went down around 7 p.m. Sunday.

Areas most heavily impacted included Mattawan, Prairie Ronde, Schoolcraft, Lawton, Vicksburg and Kalamazoo.

Midwest Energy is a distribution utility. Power is delivered to cooperative substations by transmission providers, and Midwest distributes the power from the substations over the distribution system to its members.

“It’s frustrating to be at the mercy of another provider when our members are impacted, but it’s the nature of our infrastructure. We were limited in what we knew and what we could do to help because it’s not our line and not our crews. We’re thankful to know that everyone is back up again,” said Mike Roush, Vice President of Operations.

What caused the transmission line to go down is still under investigation.
