Grand Rapids reaches tentative agreement with teachers union

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - West Michigan's largest school district has reached a tentative agreement with its teachers union.

Grand Rapids Public Schools Spokesperson John Helmholdt told Newschannel 3 Monday night that the school board agreed to a tentative deal with the Grand Rapids Education Association.

He declined to discuss specifics of the deal until all union members have seen the terms, but said that he believed a joint statement would come out soon.

Teachers have been working without a contract since the summer.

Many unions across the state have been working to negotiate new contracts before right-to-work takes effect in Michigan.

During Monday night's School Board meeting, board members also gave Superintendent Teresa Weatherall-Neal a rating of 'highly effective,' giving her 93 out of 100 points on her evaluation.
