Sheriff warns of gift card scam

KEELER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office is warning of a gift card scam.

Investigators say that a woman from Keeler Township contacted them after receiving a card in the mail that said she was eligible to receive a $100 gift card from Walmart or Target.

Officers say that the woman called the number on the card, which was answered by a person with a foreign accent. She was told that she was eligible for the card, but had to pay a small processing fee with a credit card.

The woman refused and contacted police. Walmart advised that they know nothing about the “promotion.”

Police urge the public to use extreme caution in providing anyone with your account information.
