Remembering a fallen firefighter
MATTAWAN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Nate Fruin’s casket was carried on the back of a Mattawan Fire Truck in his funeral procession Monday and one last time passed by the fire station where he was so proud to work
At his funeral service Fruin was remembered as someone who was doing what he loved, taken far too soon.
"He had a lot of friends and we're reminded every day since this has happened," says Mattawan Fire Chief Terron McLean
McLean says it's been a devastating week for the department, they've been leaning on each other and are grateful for the community support.
"We've had food dropped off at the station, to just people dropping by saying hey we support you, so it’s been good," says McLean
That community support was on display all around Mattawan Monday. There were signs in front of homes and businesses and people lined the street for the funeral procession.
"These people, the fire department, policeman, they spend all of their time, protecting us, putting out fires, doing that for us, this is the least we can do for them, spend a little bit of time with them," said Lyndon Wolf who was standing along the procession route.
There were hundreds of fire trucks and emergency vehicles in the procession which ended at Maple Grove Cemetery.
