Police arrest suspected hit and run driver

KALAMAZOO (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police arrest the man they say is responsible for a drunken hit and run crash.

The high speed crash hurt two passengers, sending one to the hospital early Saturday morning.  

Juan Cruz says he witnessed a drunk driving crash while sitting outside a house on the 1500 block of Washington. Before it happened he could hear the car racing down the street from a block away.  

“They were going like 100 miles an hour,” said Cruz.  

Too fast to make this curve, the driver slammed into this tree.  

“It jumped in the air, flipped around and slid the rest of the way.He got out, the girl got out, sat on the ground and we weren’t worried about the driver just the guy in the back cause he was hurt,” said Cruz.  

The driver took off on foot. Police caught up with him a short time later and claims he was not driving. Police arrested him for OWI.  

“They are very lucky, very lucky, because it looked like it could've been fatal,” said Cruz.  

Cruz says the victim was released from the hospital and has a broken pelvis.  

No names are being released. The suspect is expected to appear in court Monday.
