Parents sign up to keep schools safe

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Parents in Battle Creek were signing up to take action Wednesday night.

After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, Riverside Elementary is launching the international program WATCH D.O.G.S.

That program puts fathers, grandfathers and even uncles in schools, volunteering their time to watch over students.

“This is an opportunity I think for those dads who are willing to take the time off work to come in and not just volunteer in their son’s or daughter’s classroom, but also be that positive role model and experience in other classrooms too,” said P.E. teacher Tim Katz.

On Wednesday night parents packed the elementary, getting in line to volunteer.

All the potential volunteers will have to fill out applications and pass a background check. Police say this could become a county-wide program for all schools.
