N. Korea threatens nuclear strike on U.S.
NEWSCHANNEL 3 – North Korea issued a nuclear threat against the United States Thursday morning.
It’s the latest in a string of “back and forths” between the two countries that has seemingly escalated since North Korea detonated an underground nuclear blast in February.
The harsh rhetoric Thursday morning comes just hours ahead of a vote by the UN on whether to level new sanctions against Pyongyang for that recent nuclear test.
An unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang's foreign ministry said the North will “exercise its right for pre-emptive nuclear strikes on the headquarters of the aggressors."
He says it is because Washington is pushing to start a nuclear war against the North.
On Tuesday, North Korean officials also threatened to scrap the armistice that stopped the Korean War in 1953, saying it would carry out strikes against the US and South Korea, who are conducting military drills in the region right now.
The US is making it clear that nothing short of North Korea ending its nuclear program will be tolerated.
“The DPRK will gain nothing, will achieve nothing by threats or provocations which will only further isolate North Korea and undermine international efforts to ensure peace and stability in northeast Asia,” said White House Press Secretary Jim Carney. “We have urged the North Korean leadership to heed President Obama's call to choose the path of peace and come into compliance with its international obligations.”
The proposed sanctions Thursday would affect the activities of North Korean banks and cash couriers, who may be funneling money in to the country’s missile programs.
It also outlines measures to step up scrutiny of suspicious sea shipments and air cargo.
