Update: Police drop suspicious death investigation at Laurels of Bedford

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – There is an update on a suspicious death in Battle Creek.

Police are no longer investigating the case at Laurels of Bedford Nursing and Rehab Center.

Newschannel 3 first broke the story Wednesday of a woman who died at the center.

Detectives say there was a miscommunication between staff and paramedics. Staff did go through life saving protocols when her heart beat began to drop.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A West Michigan nursing and rehabilitation center is now at the center of a suspicious death investigation in Battle Creek.

Police tell Newschannel 3 that an employee at Laurels of Bedford found a woman not breathing, pale and without a heart-beat at 2:05 am Tuesday morning.

Investigators say that instead of calling 911 right away, workers searched for a number for the coroner, but they couldn’t find that, so 40 minutes later they called 911.

The woman was still warm to the touch by the time the ambulance arrived, but emergency personnel were unable to revive her.

Now, police have launched an investigation.

“Did she appear to die from natural causes, was someone attempting to assault her, those are the things we have to check to make sure no crime was committed,” said Det. Sgt. Jim Martens, Battle Creek Police.

Police are currently waiting for the medical examiner’s report for an official cause of death. In the meantime they are again interviewing everyone that was at the home at the time.
