GVSU pays out over campus pet suit

ALLENDALE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Grand Valley State University has reached a $40,000 settlement with a student who sued for the right to keep a guinea pig on campus.

Kendra Velzen says the pet is a support animal that helps her cope with her heart condition and depression.

GVSU's policy bans any pets in university housing besides fish so Kendra sued, saying the school violated federal housing rules.

As part of the settlement the school denies any improper action, but it still plans to work on a new policy for support animals.
