Police searching for hit and run suspect

COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police are still searching for a hit and run driver who left the scene of an accident in Comstock Township over the weekend.

It happened Saturday at the intersection of 35th Street and East Michigan Avenue.

A green Ford Taurus ran a red light, crashed into another car and then took off.

Police say this intersection is prone to accidents and this crash is the latest in what police are calling a growing trend of hit and runs.

They also say it is part of a much larger problem.

“We've had a number of accidents at this intersection due to disobedience to the traffic control devices were seeing them all over the county all over the state it seems to be epidemic,” said Sgt. Jeff Heppler of the Galesburg Police Dept.

According to a AAA study more than 1,500 people are killed in hit and runs each year and 11 percent of crashes nationwide involve a hit and run driver.

Anyone with information on the Comstock crash should call state police.
