Battle Creek looks to curb violence

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - City leaders in Battle Creek are looking at ways to curb violence and to change the perception of crime in the city Monday.

Battle Creek is no stranger to violence. The city recently made a few top 100 lists of violent cities and top 100 cities for violence against women.

Now city leaders are hoping to set the record straight when it comes to those statistics. They are inviting the public out Monday to talk about the issues in Battle Creek.

City leaders tell us some of the most recent lists showing the Cereal City is one of the more violent towns in America don't have all the facts.

The city manager is expected to give a presentation Monday night outlining the most recent crime statistics.

The public is also invited to come out and talk about their concerns. Members of the police department will also be on hand to answer questions.

"One of the greatest issues we have is more transparency. I think we've seen a couple of hot issues come across the table where people were just left in the dark. It just gives the feeling that the police department is more concerned about giving things a shelf life than they are about addressing the issue and saying hey we got it and that's what we need. We need a face to these things so we know we're in good hands," said Battle Creek City Commissioner Jeff Domenico.

The workshop to discuss “Crime and perception" is Monday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Battle Creek Department of Public Works.
