Sergeant swims Gull Lake
RICHLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - It may have been a perfect day to hit the waters, like Gull Lake.
Sunday morning, a Kalamazoo Township police sergeant set out to swim its entire length. That's about five miles.
Sgt. Larry Hayner says he did it for two reasons: To raise money for the Paw Paw high school band members’ summer camp and for the 47 year old to compete in the World Police and Fire Games in Ireland. Both events are set for next month.
The sergeant says he was feeling the pressure to finish today. “It was a little daunting. I knew it was going to be a three-hour swim. We guessed it would be 8,800 yards. The most was 6,200 last Monday,” he says. “In the middle of the lake there were quite a few waves.”
To help calm those waves near him, Hayner swam between two boats. A kayaker was also near him to make sure he was safe the entire swim. He says he'll continue to accept donations this month.
