Kalamazoo police looking deeper at two weekend homicides
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two weekend homicides took place in Kalamazoo just hours apart, but only one of the murder suspects is behind bars.
43-year-old Lionel Lopez was shot and killed just before 7:00 p.m. Friday night on Race Street in the Edison neighborhood.
The suspected shooter was arrested a short time later, and on Monday, 20-year-old DeMarcus Finley was arraigned on five charges, including open murder, felony firearms, and possession with intent to deliver marijuana.
Then, just four miles and a few hours later, 88-year-old Alfred Minka was found dead in his home.
Neighbors say it doesn't make any sense.
Police say a neighbor found Minka dead on the floor of his home.
These two murders doubled the number of homicide investigations this year in Kalamazoo.
Finley remains behind bars, as bond was denied.
Police still do not have anyone in custody in connection to Minka's death.
However, they do say they are no longer actively interviewing anyone either.
