Saginaw man officially charged in Portage murder
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Saginaw man is officially charged with murder in the death of a Portage woman.
Just days after Portage Public Safety officers found 56-year-old Delores Smith dead in her home at Devonshire Apartments - her ex-husband, Clinton Smith, faced a judge.
'The complaint says that you did murder Delores Smith. That is a felony it is punishable by life in prison," said Judge Richard Santoni, Kalamazoo County District Court.
Clinton Smith sat quietly, saying few words during his arraignment Monday.
Based on the nature of the charged crime, which is murder, I am committed by statute to deny bond at this time, said Judge Santoni.
On Thursday, Portage Public Safety officers found Delores dead in her home.
The victim died of a single stab wound to the left side of her neck, said Det. Lt. Tom Palenick, Portage Public Safety.
Hours later Saginaw police found Clinton Smith hiding in a backyard. He was soon brought to the Kalamazoo County Jail.
On the day she was murdered - Delores was supposed to be headed to Memphis for a family reunion. Her children tell us the two had a rocky relationship. They say Clinton had been harassing Delores over the last few months. They say hed call her cell phone and show up to her work. On Thursday, police say he showed up to her home.
We're aware of some unwanted contacts between the suspect and the victim. We're currently in the process of investigating that part of the case, said Palenick.
The two had separated several years ago but her children say they don't think Clinton could accept that she was moving on.
It's like any other family, panic, said Delores brother, Louis Anderson.
Anderson is still trying to come to terms with everything that happened.
She was sweet, she would help you - do anything for you, Anderson said.
A funeral is set for this Saturday in Delores Smith's hometown of Crenshaw, Mississippi.
Clinton Smith is due back in court September 30th.
