Community on edge after cat killings
CLIMAX (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A West Michigan community is on edge in fear of teenagers who neighbors say are torturing and killing cats
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department tells us they've found cases of cats and squirrels being beaten, tortured and left for dead in the Village of Climax and there are concerns the violence could lead to something much worse.
Many of the cases of animal cruelty are just too graphic to describe.
Those who live in Climax tell us they believe this is the work of a local teenager. Some tell us they have seen him attacking animals.
Many fear it could get worse.
We spoke with a local psychologist who says killing and hurting animals is often a stepping stone to other violence.
The Kalamazoo County Undersheriff is asking those who have been victims or might know any information to come forward.
"Someone or some persons are going around and they're killing cats or abusing them, beating them up really bad. Sometimes they're tossed back into the homeowners yard," said Undersheriff Paul Matyas. "This is serious because it points to a severe problem with whoever's doing this thing. We've got to get this now and stop it now because we don't want it to go on to the next step."
We did have a chance to speak with the mother of the teen neighbors say is responsible. She tells us her son has made some bad choices, but she has never seen him hurt an animal.
But, she says she is concerned by the allegations and will try to get her son some help.
