Cats tortured and killed, leaving community on edge
CLIMAX, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Some disturbing and brutal crimes are taking place in Climax.
The Kalamazoo County undersheriff says someone is terrorizing cats and killing them. Undersheriff Paul Matyas tells Newschannel 3 hes heard of about five cases. Matyas says hes concerned this animal torture could turn into something worse.
The situation has some parents on alert.
People like this usually turn into serial killers, said concerned parent, Jamie Everdeen.
Everdeen says she knows who is out terrorizing cats and shes even been a victim, herself.
The first time was with his bike. He tried to bring his bike up and actually slam it down on her. The second time he actually had her by her tail, our cat, and was trying to hurt her and harass her, she said.
But it appears Everdeen isnt the only victim.
What I was being told is the one cat in particular was killed and it was actually skinned and thrown back in the yard another cat was just found that it was acting really strange. The homeowners took it to the veterinarian. The veterinarian said this cat has been beaten really bad like with a baseball bat or some blunt object, said Undersheriff Matyas.
In another case, a maintenance worker in the village says he found a dead cat in a cemetery back in March. He says the cats head was smashed in.
Everdeen and Undersheriff Matyas worry this may be only a jumping off point.
When they no longer get that enjoyment, that pleasure or whatever it is that they're after - when that doesn't happen anymore by killing the animals they kick it up a notch and that's where you have to be concerned even more, said Undersheriff Matyas.
Everdeen says the young teen who she believes is to blame is already harassing her children and shes concerned they could be the next target.
I am worried about what comes next. Im worried about what he could do not just to the animals but to kids around here.
Undersheriff Matyas says they do have a detective on the case. He stresses to get to the bottom of this they need to talk to more victims involved. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriffs Office.
