Husband sentenced in wife's murder
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo County man accused of killing his wife has learned his sentence.
John Kovach says he never intended to kill his wife Nancy, but after the two fought over cooking hotdogs in June he says he snapped.
It's a story we've been following every step of the way.
As you can imagine, Nancy's friends and family are still deeply hurt by her loss, shedding many tears in court Monday.
John Kovach learned he will spend up to 32 years in prison. Kovach pleaded guilty to second degree murder and felony use of a firearm a few weeks ago.
He said she called him a lousy father in front of his two kids and was just fed up.
Monday, the judge told Kovach this tragedy could have been avoided if the two of them had gotten help with their domestic violence issues.
One of Nancy's best friends took the stand also took the stand.
John looked unshaken as she tearfully recounted how no one even knew anything was wrong in the Kovach home.
"March 23rd, 2013 Nancy Kovach posted on her Facebook page - I am proudly married to my best friend. June 17, 2013 Nancy's best friend shot her in the head and killed her," said Nancy's co-worker, Michelle Cook.
"In one split second it's not just affected us the kids are the biggest thing for me because they're never going to know their mom and be able to experience those things weddings and grandkids and that type of thing," said Kristin Gauthier.
The Kovach's two young kids are now living with Nancy's sister. We're told they are still dealing with this tragedy, but are doing as well as can be expected.
