Son of slain Portage woman speaks
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - For the first time, Newschannel 3 hearing from the son of a murder victim, found dead in Kalamazoo County.
Investigators say 56-year-old Delores Smith was killed at her home in Portage last week. Her ex-husband, 58-year-old Clinton Smith, was arrested and is expected to be arraigned on a homicide charge tomorrow.
Her son spoke to Newschannel 3 from Mississippi.
As Portage police continue to investigate the murder of Delores Smith, her oldest son, Felix Anderson, tells Newschannel 3 he's depending on his faith to keep him strong.
"When you receive news like that, it's utter shock, until everything is processed because you go into a state of unbelief," Anderson says.
Thursday, Portage Public Safety found Smith dead in her home at Devonshire Apartments. Police tracked down Clinton Smith on the east side of Saginaw hours after our sources say he showed up at work, covered in blood.
Anderson says Clinton Smith was his mother's ex-husband, and police tell us she was targeted. "It was senseless in the way she had to leave this Earth and that's pretty disheartening, but I refuse to harbor any unforgiveness, toward anybody. That's just not who I am," Anderson says.
The last time Anderson spoke to his mother was last week, on her birthday. He says she was planning on visiting her children and grandchildren this weekend. Anderson says he'll never forget how she loved to serve others.
"Some people come out of the womb playing musical instruments, some come out signing, but my mother is the epitome of what it means to serve other people," Anderson says. "You live, you adapt and you adjust. There's no love like a mother's love and there's nothing that can replace her presence."
Smith's children are planning on setting up a scholarship fund at the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Home, where she worked.
