Ex-employee pleads in recreation funds theft
KENTWOOD, Mich. (AP) - A former western Michigan city employee who was charged following a probe into the embezzlement of recreation department funds has pleaded guilty in the case.
The Grand Rapids Press reports 48-year-old Deborah Salmon pleaded guilty Monday to embezzlement in a scheme officials say may have funneled as much as $300,000 away from programs for kids, seniors and the upkeep of parks in Kentwood.
The 15-year recreation department worker in the city near Grand Rapids was placed on unpaid administrative leave in March and later fired. Authorities say they believe Salmon transferred city funds to her personal accounts to pay off personal debts.
Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 7. The Kent County prosecutor's office is asking that Salmon be sentenced to at least 12 to 20 months behind bars.
