Friends raise funds for legal defense after murder-suicide attempt
BENZIE COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Friends of a Benzie County woman accused of trying to kill her autistic daughter and herself have started raising money for her defense.
Kelli Stapleton is charged with attempted murder. She allegedly lit charcoal grills inside a van she and her daughter Issy were sitting in on September 3rd.
Issy suffered brain damage, but has made strides toward recovery.
Last year, we profiled the Stapeltons as Issy went through treatment at a facility in Portage. Her form of autisim makes her prone to violent outbursts.
The fundraising effort was announced on Stapletons' blog, "The Status Woe" Sunday night.
A friend writes, that Kelly -quote- "Wants everyone to know she is doing okay. She is truly grateful and humbled."
More than a thousand dollars has already been raised. Supporters say their goal is to raise $25,000.
