FOX 17 will not pursue plans to build tower near Newton Twp. cemetery
CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - News station WXMI announced Wednesday afternoon that it would not be pursuing plans to construct a tower at a site near the Newton Township Cemetery.
The move comes after an outcry from residents in the area, concerned over the tower being built so close to the cemetery.
"Just recently we learned that the warranty deed on the land had a provision, which specified that the land be used for cemetery use only," said WXMI General Manager Patty Kolb in a release. "In addition, members of the community raised concerns about having the tower built in close proximity to the cemetery."
Kolb reiterated that the station does wish to construct a tower in the area, "in order to improve reception for the viewers in the southeast part of our viewing area."
"We're confident that we can find a more suitable piece of land to accomplish that goal and at the same time, not upset members of the community," Kolb concluded.
The station announced that they would no longer consider the site, regardless of whether township officials grant approval, and that they would begin searching for a "more suitable" site in the area.
