Otsego community shocked by death of student
OTSEGO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Grief counselors are working with kids at Otsego High School in shock from the sudden loss of a fellow student.
Kalamazoo County Deputies say 18-year-old Tyler Burd died Monday night after his truck hit a tree on 6th Street in Alamo Township and caught fire.
The sheriff's department believes it was a suicide.
Several of his friends gathered at the site of the crash.
A fishing lure and sweet tea, two of his favorite things, are there to memorialize him.
His friends say nothing seemed to be wrong, but if there was a problem, they also say he probably wouldn't have mentioned it.
"He was always helping everybody out. He would say if you need something, just come talk to me, and people would, but if he needed something, he would never say it," said Andrew Taylor, a friend of Burd's. "He always kept to himself, He wanted to get it done his way, I think."
"He always seemed to enjoy the day," said Otsego Principal Herve Dardis. "It seemed like no matter what happened, he would take it in stride, and I think that, more than anything, is part of why this is pretty alarming for us."
The news is hitting both staff and students very hard.
The principal says they will do whatever is needed to help students.
