Harper Creek student trying to play football and serve his country
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - 18-year-old Austin Bean says his first two loves are serving his country, and playing football, and he doesn't understand why he can't do both.
Bean--a senior at Harper Creek High School--just finished basic training for the Army Reserves.
"It's crazy, because society is different, and being so into the military life and coming back is a flip," Bean said.
While Bean was at basic combat training this summer he had to miss four weeks of varsity football practice two games and the first week of school.
Bean tells us last spring he made his coach, Ed Greenman aware of his plans and knew there was a chance missing practice would be a problem. So Monday, his first day back at school, he asked his coach if he could still play.
"He said that it kills me to say this but I just can't do it," said Bean.
Greenman tells us he's not being unpatriotic only fair to the rest of his players.
"I obviously want to do what's best for Austin, But in the bigger picture I've got to do what I think is best for the majority of the kids at Harper Creek," said coach Greenman.
But Bean tells us he doesn't expect playing time right away; he just wants to be on the team he's been a part of for the last three years.
"I signed up to join the team that less than 1% of the population is willing to do and if I can serve our country why can't I play on the high school football team," said bean.
Greenman tells me that his decision is not a done deal, and he still needs to talk to the powers that be to find out what the next move is.
