New field gives children with special needs the chance to play baseball
ROCKFORD, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) It's opening day Nate Hurwitz Miracle League Field.
After the years of planning, the baseball diamond welcomed its first players Saturday with a doubleheader.
The field, part of the Art Van Sports Complex, provides children with mental and physical disabilities the chance to play baseball in the West Michigan Miracle League. In every game, each player has a chance to bat and score a run.
League president Tony Comden says Hurwitz Field the only one of its kind in West Michigan.
Players are assigned volunteers to help them hit and navigate the bases. Scholarships are available to players who are unable to pay the league's registration fees.
