Ionia Co. Sheriff's Office runs alcohol, tobacco checks on county retailers
IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Ionia County Sheriff's Office has some good news to report after running a series of alcohol and tobacco compliance checks at a series of retailers.
The compliance checks are done using minors as decoy buyers who attempt to purchase alcohol or tobacco from retailers throughout the county. They are paid for using grant funding from the Ionia County Health Department.
Of 77 compliance checks done for alcohol, only 6 citations were issued for selling to an underage decoy, making for a nearly 94 percent compliance rate.
Tobacco checks told a similar story.
81 checks were done for tobacco, and only 4 citations were issued--a 95 percent compliance rate.
In a release publicizing the results, the Sheriff's Office said that while there is always room for improvement, the checks would seem to indicate that the majority of county retailers are working to keep alcohol and tobacco out of the hands of underage citizens.
