Kalamazoo residents organize meeting for 'Clean Up Not Cover Up' campaign
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Organizers of the Clean Up, Not Cover Up campaign are holding a meeting to update the public on efforts to clean up the Allied Paper Mill site in Kalamazoo.
Residents in the Edison neighborhood for two decades have been concerned about PCB's--1.5 million cubic yards of toxic waste to be exact--dumped in their area years ago.
The main concern is that the site sits above the aquifer from which the city draws a major portion of its drinking water.
The EPA came up with a temporary fix to seal the contaminated soil, but that's not enough for many.
Congressman Fred Upton, Representative Sean McCann, and other campaign organizers are expected to speak at Wednesday's meeting.
