Local lawmaker looks to help Mich. Youth Challenge Academy grads
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A local lawmaker is trying to help Michigan Youth Challenge Academy graduates get a jump start on their careers.
State Representative Kate Segal offered testimony Wednesday, during a hearing on a House bill she's sponsoring.
The bill would allow all MYCA graduates who have already earned their GED to seek full-time employment after graduating the program.
Right now, there's a loophole in the law, where those who are 16-years-old and younger are not eligible for full-time employment, even if they have their GED.
MYCA is one of 35 National Guard Youth Challenge programs that helps students who drop out of school get a second chance at earning their high school diploma or GED.
