Wildlife authorities preparing for possible Asian carp invasion
BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Wildlife authorities are actively preparing for a possible invasion of West Michigan's waterways.
Two species of carp, originally from Asia, have been moving northward in the Mississippi River watershed for years.
So far, none have been detected in Michigan's waters, but the State Department of Natural Resources wants to respond quickly if the invasive fish show up.
September 10 & 11, crews will use nets and electro-fishing on a two mile stretch of the St. Joseph River in Berrien County.
Crews will tag and release common carp and black buffalo, then attempt to catch them again.
