12 new employees set to be hired at Kalamazoo Co. Jail
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Twelve new employees will soon be hired as the new Kalamazoo County Jail continues to take shape.
Wednesday night, the Board of Commissioners approved the hiring of the new employees.
Those 12 new employees will likely be hired next weekthat's 10 booking clerks and 2 promotions to Sergeant.
The first round of employees were already hired two months ago when the board approved the addition of 5 control operators.
The Sheriff says this new group of 12 will be followed by other small groups until until they've reached somewhere between 28 and 40 new employees.
The Sheriff also says he's taking things step by steptraining each new group before hiring another to make sure everyone is properly prepared.
There has been some criticisms of the timeline for getting the new jail open, but Sheriff Fuller says its important to do it in phases.
"We have a giant puzzle out here that has old and new mix, has new employees coming in, has old employees changing jobs and so the puzzle is real important to me - that we make this thing happen the right way and that we dont take pieces that dont quite fit and pound em- we're not gonna do that- we're gonna make sure the puzzle fits perfectly," Sheriff Fuller told Newschannel 3.
As of now, they are planning to open the new receiving area in early Octobermeaning those who are arrested after that will be brought to the new jail.
The next phase will be to move inmates from the existing wing to the new facility in order to renovate the old one.
At this point its not clear when that will be completed.
